Circular Change is in the Executive Committee of Chatham House's Global Circular Economy Roadmap Initiative
Circular Change Institute for Circular Economy is proud to be a part of the executive committee at Chatham House's project of preparing a global circular economy roadmap. The initiative was launched at the Stockholm+50 conference in June 2022 when Chatham House presented a paper with the idea of a global roadmap for an inclusive circular economy. After receiving feedback from multiple stakeholders around the world, Chatham House with partners have decided to move from concept to collective action and proceed with the Global Circular Economy Roadmap Initiative.
The rationale behind the global initiative
Many governments have already prepared national circular economy roadmaps. However, there is no process or mechanism of sufficient scale to facilitate integrated coordination and policy alignment on the international and multilateral levels. A global process could support policy exchanges and sharing of lessons learned on the national level and unlock the pathway to a global inclusive circular economy.
Furthermore, it could identify options for a multilateral process to develop over time. Currently, there is no collective common vision for an inclusive global circular economy transition, and different countries and organizations have put forward siloed and varying visions of what the circular economy entails from their contexts.
The first step of a global roadmap process is to develop a shared vision of the inclusive element of circularity that can feed into other multilateral processes. To increase the level of ambition for the circular economy and adequately address the triple planetary crisis, a global roadmap process can enable ambitious actors to come forward and lead the way, identify areas for collective actions, and propose solutions that need to be advanced at the international level.
Circular Change joins the initiative
The founder and executive director of Circular Change Ladeja Godina Košir participated at the World Circular Economy Forum in Helsinki in June 2023, where she shared our experience with the preparation of the national circular economy roadmaps, specifically in the West Balkan region. In order to contribute our experience and knowledge to the design of the circular economy roadmap on the global level, the Institute for the circular economy, as well as the ECESP (where Ladeja is a co-chair), joined the initiative.
In particular, the Executive Committee consists of the following organizations: UNIDO, World Economic Forum, World Business Council for Sustainable Development, African Development Bank, African Circular Economy Network, GIZ, EU CE Stakeholder Platform, Circular Change, PACE, SITRA, IGES, Circular Electronics Partnership, Circle Economy, Circular Change, Circular Innovation Lab and The Wyss Academy for Nature.
Preparing for the SDG Summit
Currently, the teams of Chatham House and Circular Change are preparing the program for the side event of the SDG summit in New York in September 2023. The event will focus on the progress made towards a global circular economy roadmap and the importance of inclusive circularity.
