Rethinking Food Systems: Participating at the Food Conference in Iceland

In November, 2023, Svandís Svavarsdóttir, Iceland's Minister of Food, inaugurated the Food Conference at Silfurberg in Harpa, focusing on the circular economy. Addressing attendees, the minister highlighted the country's food policy goal for 2040, emphasizing the transformation of raw materials and by-products into reusable resources. The policy aims to minimize food waste, reduce carbon footprints in production, and foster sustainability, leading to increased value creation and diversified economic activities.

The well-attended Food Conference 2023 underscored the importance of embracing the circular economy for future food systems, which is why our executive director and co-chair of ECESP Ladeja Godina Košir played a central part in the discussions.

Featuring insights from local and international experts, the conference facilitated discussions among representatives from the food industry. Attendees' questions and comments, along with the conference content, will contribute to shaping an action plan aligned with Iceland's food policy for 2040.
